Red Colored Fishing Line - Zebco "Cajun line" red Fishing Line
So ever since a couple years ago, it has been very common for some anglers to integrate specific colors like red into their tackle such as with hooks and line.
So i figured i would make a quick and to-the-point writeup about red fishing line and the additive of color into our terminal tackle/line in fishing.
For this write-up, i have done research not only from fishing aspects, but also from what people have learned about colors underwater in other hobbies and professions such as underwater photography.
First off i should review two common myths that people refer to when they are on the subject of red or colored fishing line
=========== red = blood ==============
Bass do not see red and immediatly think blood.
Their lower primative brain functions do not work that well.
And bass or other fish in general do not immediately tie different colors to specifics like danger or blood like us humans do
however Bass have been said to bein able physically to see colors the same way as humans, but due to them being in water, they experience them differently, which leads me to the fading (not disappearance) of color in water.
==== Color absorbtion and refraction makes my line color disappear.=======
absorbtion and fading of color in water due to wavelength properties.
science says that due to the ability of the colors that move in larger wavelenths
colors in the light spectrum fade to a greyish color at different depths when there is a lack of white light
therefore as white light is added or is more present (sun/flashlight) colors are more appearant.
Colors fade in depths of water but DO NOT dissappear.
Colors rather turn to a faded grey color
as far as the mentioned depths goes, a decent depth reference may be.
red ~15' - 30'
orange ~25' - 45'
yellow ~35' - 60'
green ~70'- 80'
blue ~100'
purple ~120'
However, all these depths depend on the color, clarity, and other properties of the specific body of water (fresh/salt).
But something else to consider when talking about fishing line color may be subjects like When anglers use green line, it is because they are matching the environment, rather than saying water and light makes their line DISAPPEAR completely.
Therefore before i move onto reviewing the specific red-colored line in question, i would suggest making a line color choice based on the specific environment you are fishing in rather than picking a single color because everyone says its invisible.
and another topic i found in my reasearch worth mention is the fact that many whom use high-visibility colored line actually use a fluorocarbon leader at the end of their line. Why? because color fades, not disappears.
CAJUN RED fishing line-
for bass fishing? hell no.
supposably this line was originally intended for Catfishing.
When you look on many different catfish forums, the only things they talk about when on the subject of this line are
-high visiblity above water
-high tensile strength
-High memory problems
they make no reference too low vis properties underwater, mainly because
A. the low-vis properties arent anything spectacular
B. Catfish are not shy when it comes to line color
But again, this review is to inform bass fishermen,so on the grounds of using this line for bass fishing i would have to again say "this is not something you should waste your time with"
Disadvantage wise? well...
A. i already have told that the color red gives you no advantage when it comes to bass thinking your line is a blood trail. So the addition of color to a line that could already be clear should hurt more than it helps for bass anglers.
B. This company advertises a "low memory" wiht this line, but as i have seen myself, and what ive seen others say, the line has a lot of memory, and looks like a stretch slinky as it unspools from both baitcasters and spinning reels.
Advantages?
A. This line is STRONG. at the time when i was testing it, if i got a snag, most times i had no choice but to take out my knife to get free.
B. Its cheap. at about $5 a spool from W-mart, the price makes it some of the cheapest.
So what would i suggest using this line for?
A. Catfishing
B. Line backing
C. Deep water fishing or fishing with a flourocarbon leader
but i would like to say, in no way am i an expert, rather i have done much reasearch and have done testing on my own, which leads me to the conclusions which i have written above.
so take what i have said and use it if you would like, but remember, alot of times in bass fishing your success is based on your confidence in your equipment which translates into better presentation, and maybe more fish.
best of luck,
Mark

Whats new?
so im finally on break, and there are a few things to report.
First off......
I GOT A SUMMER INTERNSHIP! woo woooo!
i am really excited, that i finally got an offer for a summer internship this year, as i have put a lot of time and energy into just getting an offer.
As for the company i got offered, i am going to be an intern with the company that i had mentioned a few times in past blogs (Alliance Coal company). With them i will be working at their Warrior Coal Location in western Kentucky (Madisonville, KY)
I am especially happy about this opportunity, because as far as i have been told in interviews, this company prefers to have their interns for 2 subsequent summers, which means if they like me as much as i hope they will, i will have a job the following (my last) summer, and after that hopefully a full time job with this company.
Either way, im really excited to get to start my career with Alliance, and i know it is going to be great.
For more info on the Alliance Coal internship, here is the link to their official website (http://www.arlp.com/career/internship.htm)
As for the other little things...
I got to go fishing with a couple of my Bass team buddies this week, and had a hell of a time.
Being my first time on the lake during the cold winter months, i was glad to finally throw a line in, and get to learn a few new things from some of the more senior members, which defiantly paid off.
Overall, it was me and Crawley in his boat, and Eric and his friend in another, and together, we pulled a total weight of about 25+lbs of fish, which was a lot more fish than i expected us all to catch. And while i only got a couple fish myself, again, it was still a lot more than i expected to pull on my first winter bass fishing attempt.
Anywho, really besides those little things, not much else is going on, but im sure ill have some time on this break to get to blog again after Christmas.
Talk to yall soon

Where the hell have i been?!
alright, so its been a long time since my last post, and a lot has been going on, so ill get to it, and try to be as organized as possible.
-Navy Karen-
So its been awhile since the event, but my sister got through her navy basic training (boot-camp) on schedule. From as much as the government would allow her to tell my family, it was tough in certain aspects, but the best i could describe of how it sounds is half classroom work and half gym class. but more importantly, she didnt die from it, and she was then able to move on-to Aschool in florida.
So there`s only a week or two left for her in Aschool, then she comes back to my parents place for a little over a week, which means she gets to be home for xmas before she gets deployed.
As for her deployment, i thought she was getting sent to virgina, but i guess she`s going back to florida for her deployment.
Anyway, i`m really proud of her for making it this far, and hope she does well all the way through her deployment.
But the funniest part about her time in the navy so far (at least in Aschool) is the fact she has to deal with a room-mate during her time there. And this is especially funny to me, due to shes going through the same typical crap that any of us colllege students deals with when they have a roommate, and she texts me all the time with her drama.
i get texts all the time that all go pretty much like
"OMFG my room-mate talks so loud on skype with her crazy chinese-asian language. She never shuts up! She doesn`t know what shes ever doing either! OMG i`m not her babysitter!"
-Miner Mark -
Recently, i did my second interview with Alliance Coal, and i think i did pretty well, but i wont know until i get the yes/no email sent to me. Apparently no-one else has heard anything, so i guess they will send something around the time of xmas break. I asked them when i would get something at the interview, but i forgot what he said.
Also, around xmas break last year is when i got a call for my second interview for Cline coal *Foresight Energy*, so i hope i get that opportunity as well.
Either way, im hoping i heard something soon.
-School Time-
As for school, im rounding out to the end of the semester now (ends next next Friday), and i`m trying to end with a bang. I especially cant wait to finish my online class which i extended from last year, and get the midterm/final for that class done next week Tuesday/Friday.
i feel like im doing really good in my work-based classes *with projects i mean*, and fairly decent in my comprehensive classes *like calculus* so i`m hoping to increase my GPA to a better standard than it currently sits.
Anyway, i just cant wait for this upcoming break, being that i wont have this online class or any other work lingering above my head, which will allow me to truly relax for once.
-Little LO-LO-
so i figured id have to write about my little Lauren "lo-lo" as i haven't written in awhile.
she herself is doing well, i feel like she is still enjoying being "the bread winner" at the current time, and i`m sure she is defiantly enjoying me being Mr. housemaid and Mr. Dinner Cook.
Together a little while ago we put up our Christmas tree in the apartment, and we now have a bunch of awesome presents under the tree.
We are still trying to figure out when we are going to have our own little "apartment Christmas" as she has to be at her parents place for the holiday, and i figured it would be nice to go to mine so i can see my sister before she deploys. We are hoping to spend next years holidays together more, but we`ll see if she can tell her mom shes not coming home for a holiday or two.... well see......
-FISHING-
Sooo... fishing has been fun these last couples weeks, especially with my team.
I finally got cold water bass fishing figured out slightly, and am a little more confident fishing even when my hands feel like they are gonna fall off.
any who within the time i was off not writing a blog, there have been a few updates about the bass team.
first off we finally got our jerseys, and they are sweet. it just feels awesome to finally be in a team sport that i enjoy, as i was never interested in any other sports all my life, and its just nice to be able to show off something like my jersey to my family, who never saw me enjoy a team sport as much as this.
also just recently, to get my mind off of the drama of school crap, i figured i`d do my team a favor by revamping the Basser`s website to something more presentable, professional, and easy to use. if anyone knows me, they know first off know i love to teach myself new things, and well guess what, i now know how to create, post, and publish a website. And i`m pretty good at it i found. Also another thing about me is i can only deal with something being broken for so long before i just need to fix it, regardless of the difficulty. and well... the team website fell under that category.
for anyone interested, this is the website i put together in the last 3 days ( i uploaded it to my personal SIU website before it goes live as the "official website") - http://mypage.siu.edu/mklimek5/
-Anything Else?-
well, one could say i can now legally live "THE HIGH LIFE!" being that i`m now 21, and can legally do all the things i could never before. really, my actions and behaviors now arent much different than before being 21, as i never really was a big party guy, and well i`ve kinda always been an old-man even before i was 21. Anyways, its still cool, and im glad ive made it this far.
anywho, its almost time to start making dinner for lauren`s arrival home from work, maybe ill write again soon.

Interviews and ZOMBIES
WOO WOO!
got the first callback for a second interview for a summer internship!
The company is Alliance coal, and for those not familiar with my past blogs, this is the same company that i visited for the underground mine trip in Western Kentucky. I am scheduled for a second interview on November 16th, and I`m gonna hit this with everything Ive got.
Also, due to the fact that i strongly believe that my success for call-backs has much to do with my post-interview "thank-you letters" that i provide after every interview, i will post an example around the same spot as my resume. I hope that this gets others more call-backs, and maybe even a job offer or two (if you don`t do this already)
ALSOOOOO.....
i got my Mossberg the other day, and for those whom dont go to my facebook, here are the pictures
Details wise, it`s a Mossberg 88 Maverick, 12 gauge, with a 27.5" barrel.
This isn't a slug gun like i thought, but uses regular shotgun loads, and rifled slugs.
I am really happy with this purchase, and am excited to shoot some clay pigeons with it very soon.
For this, i think i am going to go to the Rend Lake shooting complex that is one of the only places around me as it seems that are open to the public. If anyone has been here, or knows of other places around Carbondale ~1hour radius, lemme know. Otherwise, here is the link to the place

OH AND ALSO!
if you are like me, and are preparing for the upcoming zombie apocalypse, you should check out the new AMC series "The walking dead" which premiers this Halloween. I am excited about there finally being a running series on a zombie outbreak, rather than a movie that just ends after 2 hours. Hope it turns out really cool, and if i feel nerdy enough, maybe ill post a follow-up review, but so far it looks spot-on.

Rocks, In-laws, and Shotguns.
So wow. its been a while since i`ve wrote, and i`m well due for a new blog post and here it is.
Ive had alot goin on since i wrote last, so ill try to remember as much as i can so we can all be on the same page.
---- Start with whats going on at the good ol` SIUC.
Every class besides Intro to mining and music is kicking my ass.. its gettin tough, and thats plain out. I have this stupid gen-ed biology class that is being tough by a guy who thinks we all know how a human genome works, and he is treating the class like so.
really my problem is with gen-ed class professors as a whole.
i mean, its a friggn gen-ed, like sociology last semester. If 3/4 of your class is not the major of the class you are teaching, how about you dumb everything down to what everyone can understand, and dont expect everyone to have a great interest in the subject.
But besides that, im gettin on, hope everything turns out for me (it always does).. anyway its school, always gonna suck.
Oh and this weekend... saturday was a trip.... a field trip.... to look at rocks... literally.
For geology, we had this 9 hour (NINE HOUR) field trip, where we, in short drove an hour and a half to look at rocks....
and when i say this, i dont mean "learn about" rocks, we litterally drove place to place, got out of the van, and looked around at rocks (individually, not with the group)...we did this place to place, while our cenial old teacher stood there in silence and looked at rocks too.
and what makes it so much more fun, we need to write a 5-10 page report about our trip (to look at rocks)
it was especially sad that when i compared a historical geological event to a hotdog, that the hotdug turned out more interesting for everyone on the trip.... or maybe i was more amusing, i dont know.. the whole trip was a waste of a saturday.
besides classes,
i had another past interview (with alliance coal) and i think it went very very well, and wouldnt doubt having a 2nd interview from them.
and also this upcoming week, i will have another interview (patriot coal), and i am very excited about that.
oh oh oh... and i found out the other day too, that it turns out, i will not graduate until before fall of 2012, due to the fact that i cant take more than 18 creds a semester, and some classes arent even offered until then. so i will be in school a total of 4.5 years before i graduate, which isnt too bad, but should be interesting to figure out my job situation, as to the fact that i can have another semester for an internship, or whatever.... i dunno, but we`ll see what happens.
As for Family Life lots here too...
I`ll list it for easy reading.
#1 - Got karens first and second letters from navy boot-camp. All is well for her, and she doesnt have much time left before graduation. But especially amusing was her response to the items i sent with the letter. She absolutely LOVED the extra blank 8x10 paper i gave her with pre-stamped envelopes to write back. she liked this because the navy only gives them tiny stationary, and well, i thought it was funny she was so grateful for paper. Anyway, she said she is not missing her facebook, or cellphone, but we`ll see about that the day she gets back to civilization.
#2 - Lauren`s family Came to visit, i was only there with them for a few hours of the day (cause i was fishing) but it was actually kind of fun, they really liked our nicely decorated apartment, and her mom bought us a bunch of hamburger helper.. cant get enough of that, really. Actually wouldn`t mind more visits from the Plunk/Flota family.
#3 - ITS PUMPAKIN TIME! yes, that time of the year when leaves start to die, and the Carbondale hobo`s migrate south. Anywho, we carved our pumpkin, and ate the seeds, and this year`s is pretty decent. and btw, our "extra facial hairs" came to be from the dry-erase markers we used to mark the pumpkin, and i guess each other`s faces.
#4 - Speak about hobo`s needing to find warmth in the winter, i think i can bring up the subject of home-defense in small college/drunk towns. In my mind, due to the fact of the placement of our apartment in the town, and that, well the only thing separating my 5`01" girlfriend and a potential bad-guy/robber in our apartment is a budget dead-bolt and an old door frame, calls for a backup protection solution.
And this is why i feel its time that i make my first gun purchase.
Basiclly, i`m going cheap, simple, and effective.
Whats cheap and simple and effective you ask?
![]() |
well a pump action 12-gauge shotgun of course. (Mossberg to be exact)
It`s cheap, and will get the job done.
and by "job done", i mean, bad guy running down the block with dirty undies, or with a couple extra holes in him. Either way, as long as me and Lauren are safe, i could care less where the pieces of your leg are.
And i think of it, as, if something does end up "going down" it will be the best purchase i will have made in my (and little lo-lo`s) life.
Anyway, ill keep updated on this subject, and will probably be starting the countdown of the waiting period very shortly from now.
Anywho, to wrap this all up.
Fishing for this season is slowing down a bit. The final qualifiers for the big events have turned out to be scheduled the same days as i am home for Karen `s navy graduation, and i am not going to miss that to catch a couple fish. So i`m pretty much cleaning up my gear, and leaving alot of my fishing for just the wednesday campus lake things, and my occasional "i need to get out of the apartment" times. Trust me, the time will not be wasted, i have a lot of things (scholarly things) that i need to get done.
so thats really all i can think of for now, but if anything else happens, im going to write about it at least a day or two after now, now more waiting a month before my next blog post.

ready.. set.. Interview
yep, the interviews have begun. For me, the interviews this year are more important than ever. This is mainly because i hope that i can get an intern with a company, and work my ass off so that they want me back after graduation the following year or so. This is just my idea, and i really hope it works out somewhat like i plan. I mean, i feel like my work ethic is good, and well, people tend to like me.
Anywho, the first of the important interviews of this semester was this Friday (yesterday) with Cline group. This is the same company that called me in for a second interview last winter. However, i feel like the main reason why i didn`t get anything past the second interview was the simple fact that i had no experience being underground, or any mine in general. BUT, now i do, and i`m more confident than ever that i have a really good shot at an interview with this company. But as for the actual interview itself, it turned out to be a great interview, especially since the HR guys that interviewed me were fellow bass anglers. Never before have i been asked a "what color jig would you use" question. anyway, i think i nailed it, and i was glad that i had something to talk about and start conversation with at the Cline group football tailgate. I am extremely excited for a possible callback for a second interview, and hope it leads to good things this summer.
next interview i got planned is with Alliance, the same company that owns the underground mine that i visited just recently. I also feel like that one is going to go well, and i can only hope that i will have multiple offers if possible. I know its alot to hope for, but who knows.
Fishing has been getting really interesting over here too. The actual fishing, it sucks, weather doesn't know what it wants to do (hot or cold?) and that gets me confused as to what i should be throwing, and i have to tie on like 5 different lures before i can get a bite. But more so what is getting interesting is what we are doing in the Saluki Bassers.
First off, like i said before, the next qualifier (FLW/ESPN) is set for this upcoming weekend, and im excited about that, and i get to boat with Clayton, and yes we had boat problems the first time we fished together, but this time, were gonna hit em with a vengeance.
Second and more importantly, we are going through a major change as to how we are represented by the school. We used to be only a RSO with the university, but now we are about to become, a "sports team club". which means alot of access to alot of things. and this includes money, which of course we need to go to big tournaments and such, which a good part of would usually come out of our pockets. So, its a big thing, and im glad i am part of it.
well, thats about it for now, but lastly, i need to complain about UPS.. OMG they piss me off. So i ordered a bunch of tackle, and it was shipped UPS. and, i was an idiot and forgot to put my apartment number on the order. Well, YOUD THINK that i could call up UPS and have them add the number to the order? HELL NO.. of course, they would wait until there was a problem in the shipment to fix it, instead of preventing it from being a problem. Anwho, once "couldnt find apartment number" showed up on tracking, i called up UPS and now i have to pick up my package in Marion monday. all im saying is, this didnt have to be a problem, but the company didnt care, and that pisses me off.... whatever, its just tackle, no biggie.
well, thats about it for now.

The October with no Weekends
So, a well due update, a date night with Lauren, lots of fishing, getting ready for interviews, and some other stuff to be talked about.
So first things first, ill talk about the little fruit-snack lover, Lauren. Shes been working a lot, and i`ve been fishing a lot lately, so we figured we would start doing a more frequent date night, dinner and a movie kinda thing, so we could just relax. This week we went to see "Easy-A", good movie, it has a hot red-head (Ive always had a thing..) and it was a movie i was able to laugh at a little, but more-so, the night was just an overall great time for us to not have to . But anyways, besides that, i made Little-Lauren a bit mad the other day, cause i am scheduled to fish the FLW/ESPN qualifier, the same morning her family is coming to visit the campus for a football game (view calendar on right). Just thought i should mention it, so you know when i write a blog about how i got my head bitten off the saturday of the 16th, you now know the back story.
So yes, for fishing, i am fishing lake Kincaid Saturday Oct 16th with one of my Basser team mates (not sure whom yet) to get one of the last 4 spots for the FLW college series, and qualify for the ESPN Boat US series. Should be some good fun, and hopefully i will have some new lures to play with due to one of our teams bigger sponsorships (Tackle warehouse) updating for this year, so i can buy some cheap stuff. But i`m defiantly psyched for this qualifier, and hope everything goes my way, and i get some big ones in the well. I`ve been doing well my last times fishing (granted its on campus lake) and i am more confident in my fishing than i have ever been.. in the words of my hero, Chigger Brumballo, "IM ON EM! IM ALL OVER EM! YOU GIRLS SCARED?"
ALSO.. this upcoming month, there are a lot of interviews for summer internships that i will be attending. I am especially looking forward to a few companies, and with this also, i hope goes my way, and i get a few second interviews. I feel like im going to have to pull all the stops to get an internship, but i dont think i will have too much of a problem, i`m a great candidate for hire in all aspects (besides my GPA), and now FINALLY have experience with being in an underground mine, which is why i still believe i was not offered a position by companies that otherwise seemed very interested in me. So, yes, im excited for that.
and finally, i sent Karen my first letter to her Navy boot-camp training base, and i cant wait to get a reply. I sent her a letter from me, one from lauren, all my blogs (writen after she left), a $10 At&t world phone card, pre-stamped envelopes, extra writing paper, oh and her facebook page updates. Can you say awesome brother? yea well i can, so EAT IT.
Anywho, i really should get finished with studying for my Geology and Calc2 exams (which are tommarow).
oh and if you didn`t get the blog title by now, it means my weekends besides this one coming up are all booked up for October, usually with events starting at 6am or around that time, that i have to attend, so thats why October (for me) has no weekends.
